Technology and society have a cyclical co-dependence on each other, but due to some lack of knowledge or new inventions in the technology common man could not run parallel to the latest innovations and hence there is misconceptions or myths get developed. To promote their individual products, various companies call for integration of new technologies as compare to the present one and started building of misconceptions. Media, advertisements and false messages promote the formation of these myths.
In the feature we discuss some of the common technology myths that are present in our society and we might think they are true.
E-mail is safe as it requires password
The common myth about the email security is that if the person is using a strong password than it is safe. But according to sources, Google's Gmail, Microsoft's Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo's Mail are said not be immune to trickery from cyber crooks and could easily give up passwords. All the services rely on automated password reset programs which can reportedly be compromised by simply knowing a user name and the answer to one security question. Further, the content of an email can be read while travelling between your PC and the e-mail server by a hacker.
In camera only megapixels matter
In digital imaging, a pixel is the smallest item of information in an image, which is often represented using dots or squares. The general perception is higher megapixels means better picture, but for a good quality picture, they also requires other features like image sensor size and type, lenses and image stabilization technology, shutter speed etc.
Anti-virus means full security
Antivirus software is used to prevent, detect and remove malware, and is recommended for any PC. But, if you have such software, it virus does not mean that your PC is now completely secure. To avoid any attack from computer viruses, worms, and Trojan horses, you must update your antivirus. Further, it is advisable to follow basic security strategies like not to rely on any unidentified email or link provided on net.
Cookies can track your web history
Browser cookies are small piece of text stored on a user's computer by a web browser. Yes, they track your activities on a website. But, they only facilitate your browser activities if you visit same site again. You can manually delete all the cookies formed during your browsing or they get automatically deleted when you shut down your browser.
Shift + Delete means data deleted forever
Many users think that data deleted permanently cannot be recovered. But, after the availability of various file recovery software in the market, which enables you to undelete files, even if they have been removed from the recycle bin. However, recovery is possible as long as the disk area is not overwritten by any new disk.
Can we switch off our PC before Shut Down?
There can be some data loss, if we have not save before the shut down, but there is no physical damage to the hard disk by doing so. Some users believe that they should restart their PC after few hours of working, but analysts say that shutting down your PC every few hours may actually be harmful to your PC. Actually, when we shut down our PC, its components get stressed. Therefore, we should rest our PC once a while when required. |
